Job Summary: The Commentary Editor will develop and oversee The Daily Signal’s opinion content, working with staff writers, external contributors, and public officials to produce compelling commentary that shapes and influences policy debates. This role requires strong relationships in the conservative movement and an understanding of what makes for a viral op-ed that gets buzz in a busy news cycle.

The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $115,000 annually. This range is a good-faith estimate, and the final salary offered to a selected candidate depends on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, and other qualifications; internal and external market pay for comparable jobs; and level of hire based on aforementioned qualifications.

This role requires strong relationships in the conservative movement and an understanding of what makes for a viral op-ed that gets buzz in a busy news cycle.
Job Duties:
- Write compelling headlines that offer an incentive to click, select photos for inclusion in content, and assist in selecting content for and editing daily email newsletters.
- Edit 8-14 articles daily, moving with speed while ensuring each article or video script is compelling, optimized for traffic and impact, and adheres to in-house and AP style.
- Demonstrate strong news judgment and regularly suggest timely ideas for insightful and relevant op-eds to staff writers and external contributors.
- Review content for factual accuracy and adherence to journalism standards without sacrificing timeliness.
- Build relationships with Daily Signal staffers and external contributors, working with them to develop top-notch commentary content.
- Review and respond to outside editorial submissions.
- Develop an editorial calendar aligned with policy developments, congressional schedules, and news cycles.
- Work closely with Daily Signal digital team to set and enforce standards ensuring all content is optimized for social media sharing, suggest commentary content that could be adapted for digital platforms, and manage impact reports and traffic analytics.
- Represent The Daily Signal at appropriate media conferences and related functions, while maintaining an active presence on X and other social media platforms to promote content.
- Coach interns and less experienced staff on commentary writing, journalism standards and editing.
Education: Bachelor’s degree
